THE BOYKIN RECORD

When I ran for Cook County Commissioner in 2014, I vowed to bring economic and government resources to the 1st District- an area long overlooked by County Government.  During my first three years in office I have kept my word, advocating nonstop for the people of the 1st District- and delivering results.

We have made progress. But our work is not done- and that is why I am running for re-election as YOUR Cook County Commissioner for the 1st District.

Priorities

Protect and Improve Public Safety and Public Health

  • Authored a 7 Point Plan to Reduce Gun Violence
  • Authored and passed legislation doubling the penalty for illegal assault weapon possession in Cook County
  • Authored and passed legislation to prohibit the use of “choke holds” by Cook County law enforcement officers
  • Authored and passed the ordinance to eliminate the tax on feminine hygiene products

Economic Development-Investing in the 1st District

  • Secured $2.5 MILLION in Cook County Violence Prevention and Restorative Justice Funds to 1st District Stakeholders
  • Secured $18 MILLION in Economic Development funds through a combination of tax incentives and grants to support 1st District business and bring jobs to 1st District Neighborhoods
  • Secured $5.5 MILLION in Stormwater Abatement Funds to prevent flooding in the 1st District

Equitable and Responsible Budgeting

  • Played a leading role in passing a 2018 Budget that protects public safety and public health services while ensuring that Cook County remains affordable to residents of all economic backgrounds.

Legislative Achievements and Key Votes

  • Voted “NO” on the regressive 1% increase in the County Sales Tax that hit the poorest Cook County residents the hardest
  • Voted “NO” and led the successful effort to repeal the regressive Sweetened Beverage Tax that hit the poorest Cook County residents the hardest
  • Sponsored and Led the Successful Effort to Pass the Countywide Minimum Wage Increase
  • Sponsored and Led the Successful Effort to Pass Paid Sick Leave
  • Sponsored and Passed a 2018 Budget Amendment to create position in the Office of the Inspector General solely devoted to investigating sexual harassment complaints
